Lajjitaadi Avasthas in Miley Cyrus’s Birth Chart by Patricija Venckutė

Introduction

How many people have begun their careers while still being just a child? How many of them managed to continue and not lose everything while entering the adult world? As far as I know, there haven’t been many like that and one such individual is Miley Cyrus who managed to not fall apart from the fame, money, and psychological stress that accelerated while she was only 9 years old. This uniqueness piqued my curiosity and thus in this essay, I will explore three different Lajjitadi Avashtas: Garvita, Kshobita, and Mudita in Miley Cyrus’ birth chart, and demonstrate how they have been manifesting in her actual life experiences.

Saturn in Garvita Avashta

Based on the formula for Garvita Avashta, the planet has to be either in its exaltation or moolatrikona (Kurczak, Planetary Avashtas Class 1, 2023). In Miley’s birth chart, Saturn is at 13 degrees of Aquarius, meaning its dignity is moolatrikona. Thus, the latter factor makes Saturn Garvita which translated from Sanskrit to English means “proud” (Sanskrit Dictionary, 2023). Since Saturn in Cyrus’s chart is in the 10th house, the healthy pride for the capacity to be strong in Saturn's energy will be Miley's most visible quality. What are some ways that Miley feels proud of her energy of Saturn?

First, when Saturn is in Garvita state, the native is proud of their capacity to survive and endure the difficult times of life (Kurczak, Planetary Avashtas Class 6, 2023). Due to Saturn’s placement in the 10th house, I immediately think of the year 2013 when Miley Cyrus experienced myriads of criticism from authority figures for her career choices at that time. This experience unquestionably ties in with the Sun starving Saturn since the Sun represents authority figures. However, although many people were prognosticating the end of Miley Cyrus’s career, she was able to overcome all of the criticism, endure, survive, and through hard work and dedication come back with a new and powerful album “Endless Summer Vacation” that has been ranking at the top in the world of music since the release of it on March 10th, 2023. In addition, Saturn as the lord of the 9th house in the 10th foretells about delays to creativity (Ryan Kurczak, Appendix II, 2014), and that correlates with Miley’s career experiences for the last 10 years.

Second, when Saturn is in a Garvita state, one can maintain humbleness (Kurczak, Planetary Avashtas Class 6, 2023). In an interview hosted by Apple Music, Miley talked about creating a stage for the audience that would be eye-leveling her because she doesn’t want her listeners to be less than she is (Miley Cyrus 26:30-26:40). This perfectly portrays how humble and simple Miley is despite the fame and success she has managed to achieve. In addition, the humbleness that is given by a Garvita Saturn is supported by the Ascendant in the sign of Taurus because the latter is known to be simple and grounded.

Third, a proud Saturn makes one good at discipline and proper detachment. In several different interviews, Miley has spoken about her ability to be disciplined about drinking alcohol: “It’s pretty easy for me to be sober or in and out of sobriety because it's like the day I don't want to do it anymore, I don't” (The U.S. Sun, 2020). In addition to that, Miley has also shared about her ability to completely detach from the outside world, spend days alone, and let go of all kinds of emotions (Miley Cyrus 34:30). These qualities of Saturn are supported by Shadbala in Miley’s chart since almost all of the balas are sufficient except the Chesta Bala which means that Miley sometimes might lack confidence with her energy of Saturn. In other words, all of the balas show that Miley is capable of discipline, hard work, and endurance, but due to the lower Chesta Bala score, she might not always believe that she is capable or feel shy about it.

Although the 10th house receives lots of prosperity and almost no annihilation and Saturn is in good dignity and has a strong raw score of Shadbala, its situation is not utterly positive because of starvation coming from the Sun, the Moon, and Mars. Therefore, the bhava yoga for the 10th in the 10th has a mixed outcome: “Rises to high levels of skill and success, life’s work is honored and preservers through time, heavily criticized for work, well known for one’s inabilities or faults” (Ryan Kurczak, 2014). The two positive outcomes would be always more prominent while Mercury/Saturn or Venus/Saturn periods or transits, while the negative ones would be highlighted more during the periods or transits that would involve the Sun, the Moon, or Mars.

Kshobita Mercury by the waning Moon

Both Mercury and the Moon are in the sign of Scorpio and in the 7th house, making this Kshobita Avashta related to the inability to intimately bond with one’s partners. To be even more specific, since the 7th house represents the partner or the spouse, the relationship between Mercury and the Moon is dictating the approach to relationships of Miley Cyrus’s potential partners. Based on Ryan Kurczak, when the waning Moon is agitating Mercury, one experiences a lack of fair exchange because of giving too much and not receiving back equally (Kurczak, Planetary Avashtas Class 5, 2023). In addition, relationships suffer due to a lack of proper communication. In an interview from 2 years ago, Miley admitted that it is the truth of her experiences with relationships when the interviewer repeated a line from her song: “I always pick the giver because I have always been the taker” (Miley Cyrus 37:33-37:44). This statement written in a song and verified by Miley perfectly exemplifies Kshobita Mercury by the Moon in the 7th house. Moreover, the lord of the 7th house – Mars – is Debilitated, further telling that the partners of Miley lack the strength of character to not become used and disrespected by Miley. This speaks of the possibility of relationships ending because Miley’s partners feel frustrated and agitated.

Mudita Mars by the Sun

The formula of Mudita Avashta is based on a planet being in a friend’s sign or aspected by a friend or conjunct Jupiter (Kurczak, Planetary Avashtas Class 1, 2023). In Miley Cyrus’s birth chart, Mars is aspected by the Sun, a friend of Mars. Therefore, Mars receives +235.9 points from the Sun. This means that the matters represented by the Sun are supporting Mars. One of the main matters that the Sun represents is authority figures and the father. Thus based on this Mudita Avashta, the native is supported by authority figures and the father (Kurczak, Planetary Avashtas Class 2, 2023). How have both of the latter been significant roles in Miley Cyrus’s path?

Starting with authority figures, one of the most important to Miley has been Dolly Parton – a legend of country music of the 60s. Due to being close with Miley Cyrus’s father Billy Ray Cyrus, Dolly became a godmother to Miley, while the latter was still just a kid. Since then, Dolly and Miley had worked together on a Disney show “Hanna Montana” and later on, on some music projects. In an interview with Joe Ragon from 2 years ago, Miley spoke of periodically consulting with Dolly as her main mentor through fax and she even said this about her: “Dolly is everything” (Miley Cyrus, 1:33:28-1:33:33). Moreover, when Joe Ragon asked Miley if she could wear a hoodie in public to hide her identity, she said that she wouldn’t do that because “it’s not Dolly approved” (Miley, 1:33:22). What Miley meant by saying so is that Dolly is an authority figure who has the power to say “no” to her in a way that is meant to support Miley’s path in the music industry. To add a correlation to this Mudita Avashta manifestation, the lord of the 11th house – well known for influential people – Jupiter, a great benefic, is Rashi aspecting the 10th house and the 1st house – indicating that influential people are supportive of Miley Cyrus as an individual and of her success in the tangible world.

Along with the support of Dolly, Billy Ray Cyrus, the father of Miley, and a well-known country singer has always been there for her as well. Although he was not in favor of Miley starring in the show “Hanna Montana” being just 12 years old, he nonetheless brought a lot of opportunities to her by being famous and has provided all support needed for her musical career. An additional point for the father being famous is found by Rahu being in the same house as the Sun since Rahu represents hunger for materialistic achievements.

Conclusion

When Miley Cyrus entered the world, she immediately started from one of the hardest astrological periods that is ruled by Saturn. By being placed in the 10th house, Saturn brought many challenges related to career, fame, and worldly success from a comparatively young age. Since Saturn is proud, Miley Cyrus managed to overcome all of the challenges and become an extremely strong individual who can persevere through criticism and rejection. Certainly, authority figures like Dolly Parton or Miley’s father Billy Cyrus have contributed to this hero’s journey by supporting and guiding her. On the flip side, the negative avashta between Mercury and the Moon didn’t bring success to Miley because of unequal dynamics with her partners.
