Saturn throughout the 12 Houses by Patricija Venckutė

Introduction

For many people, Saturn is the planet that is often feared because it is a karaka for sorrow, grief, loss, separation, limitations, restrictions, obstacles, and death. However, in Vedic Astrology, Saturn is regarded as the one that teaches us profound lessons about existence. Due to its malefic and dry qualities, Saturn is rough, tough, and unpleasant, and thus indeed its lessons are often very painful, but at the end of it all, we are blessed with greater wisdom and maturity of the soul. Some of the main lessons that Saturn conveys to humanity are patience, discipline, practicality, and proper detachment from one’s desires. Furthermore, Saturn’s form is represented by the quadrupeds, thus another major lesson is about survival. In addition, focused to look down and being influenced by Tamas Guna, Saturn enables us to persevere, be realistic and keep going even in the face of insurmountable difficulties. When Saturn is in good dignity and not afflicted by its enemies, it makes one dedicated, secure, stable, resilient, and humble. However, if Saturn is troubled in a birth chart, then it makes one either lazy or a workaholic, insecure, not able to spend time alone, lacking stability, and arrogant. Whichever the case, Saturn is not a gentle benefic planet, thus it will cause some kind of difficulty, challenges, and suffering either way. The dignity of it will simply tell if the native will be able to endure and deal with them or not. Below I will prompt possible outcomes for Saturn being in each of the 12 houses. However, the possibilities are by no means complete. The entire picture will be determined by the rest of the chart, the sign Saturn is in, Saturn’s dignity, and aspects to it.

1st House

Saturn in the 1st house could indicate that the native has a thin and long body, a sharp bone structure, a pale or darker skin complexion, and possibly a hump. They would appear older than their actual age and would express some kind of dark, mysterious, and detached energy. At the same time, the person would choose to have a simple and practical look. They would be attracted to a path of life that would be based on Tamasic qualities, like fixing problems or improving situations. Their health would be something they would have to be responsibly attuned to all the time. If Saturn is in difficult conditions, the person might have to face many health problems. But if Saturn is in good dignity, the person might live for a long time, since Saturn is a karaka for longevity.

2nd House

Saturn in the 2nd house could indicate that the native is extremely cautious, reserved, and strategic about managing one’s finances. This attitude possibly stems from their childhood experience with money that was often scarce. Or it could also arise from their difficult experience of gaining wealth as adults. The person could make a living through Saturnian ways, like farming, mining, archaeology, any kind of service type jobs, or government occupations, since Saturn symbolizes structure and authority figures.

3rd House

Saturn in the 3rd house could indicate a separation or distance between the native and their younger siblings. Their speech and communication could be slower, cautious, and well-thought-through. If they would be interested in arts, they would probably choose a realistic and traditional approach, like learning to academically draw human portraits. They wouldn’t rush to obtain skills and knowledge. Conversely, they would take their time to master their craft. The person could also be interested in managerial work.

4th House

Saturn in the 4th house could indicate that the mother of the native is cold, disciplined, detached, and reserved. Possibly, she didn’t provide proper emotional nurturing for the native, and thus they struggle to feel inner contentment. They might always feel a lack within that makes them feel not good enough to be loved and accepted by others. Saturn in the 4th could also give a hard time for the native to have land, luxuries, and a pleasant home. Their home could serve a more functional role that helps them survive. Since the 4th house represents agriculture and Saturn resonates with that, it could indicate that the native works in agriculture or has a home on a farm.

5th House

Saturn in the 5th house could indicate delays to having children or someone who doesn’t want to or can’t have them. Oppositely, this could indicate that the native is tough and disciplined with their children. Since the 5th house also represents the mind, Saturn here could stipulate someone with a pessimistic and self-doubting mind. If that’s so, they would have to learn to discipline their thinking process and work harder to change all that negativity into positive thinking. In terms of romanticism, the native would lack that and instead be straightforward and practical in their ‘romantic’ affairs.

6th House

Saturn in the 6th house could indicate someone who is highly suited working menial jobs. Their level of service would depend on the dignity of Saturn. The stronger Saturn is, the harder the native can work and provide good service. Hence, they would take their daily routines and responsibilities at work seriously. Since Saturn represents Vata dosha, the health of the native might experience challenges due to too much dryness and resulting in things like constipation, gas, dehydration, mental restlessness and anxiety, and roughness of the skin.

7th House

Saturn in the 7th house could indicate a person who experiences delays in the department of relationships. They might meet their partner much later in life or deal with some kind of obstacle to being together. Moreover, they could be attracting partners for whom they could be ‘karmically’ indebted from the past incarnations. Those debts would cause some sort of suffering and grief for the native. On the flip side, Saturn in good dignity could indicate that the native can seriously commit to their partners and endure all of the challenges together. In addition, Saturn in the 7th can stipulate that the partner of the native will be older or more mature than the native, also serious, disciplined, detached, a hard worker, and realistic.

8th House

Saturn in the 8th house could indicate that the native will enjoy a long life if Saturn is in good dignity. However, if Saturn is afflicted, then the longevity of the native could be severely harmed. Saturn in the 8th could also indicate unforeseen and sudden losses or events that lead to great sorrow. Psychologically, the person with Saturn in the 8th could be challenged by self-destructive thoughts, like self-doubt or believing that one is not good enough or not worthy of love. However, if Saturn is in good dignity, then the native could cultivate the capacity to be properly detached from all of these psychological issues.

9th House

Saturn in the 9th house could indicate someone with realistic and even stoic ways of understanding life. Without tangible proof of it, they wouldn’t believe in something greater than themselves. Saturn in the 9th could also cause delays or obstacles to one’s higher education or realization of one’s dharma. Furthermore, the person could be facing challenges with their native culture, traditions, and religion. Similar problems could occur in the native’s marriage life. On the contrary, if Saturn is in good dignity, the native might enjoy their marriage partner for the entirety of their life.

10th House

Saturn in the 10th house could indicate that the native has to work harder than most to obtain worldly success and recognition. Possibly there would be some kind of obstacles to having the career of their dreams. Furthermore, Saturn in the 10th could indicate that the native chooses a career that has Saturnian qualities, like farming, mining, archaeology, any kind of service type jobs, or government occupations. If Saturn is strong, with time the native could be able to raise to great heights and attain lots of power and authority.

11th House

Saturn in the 11th house can show someone who gains supplemental income from Saturnian avenues, like farming, mining, archaeology, any kind of service type jobs, or government occupations. The person might have personal goals related to obtaining authority or they might have no desires at all since Saturn represents detachment from one’s desires. With their social networks and involvements, they might be practical and straightforward. They wouldn’t enjoy being in group dynamics because Saturn makes one introverted, reserved, detached, and much more in favor to be alone.

12th House

Saturn in the 12th house, if in good dignity, can make the native excellent at renunciation, strict ascetic practices, and solitude. They could also be interested in helping the poor by getting involved in appropriate charity organizations. If Saturn is afflicted, in privacy, they might be cold and lacking sympathy for others. A very difficult Saturn could even influence the native to secretly perform immoral deeds. Furthermore, Saturn in bad dignity could cause many psychological issues that would deeply run through the native’s subconsciousness. They would have to put in a lot of work to transform those traumas.
