Meghan - 4th House
Here’s the fourth installment of “The Meghan Project”. It’s about 1 100 words long, and really should be around 800! so please let me know what you think is most interesting … (Don’t forget to use the glossary if there are terms that are unfamiliar).
4 Fourth House
The fourth house represents happiness, mother, home, inner contentment and education. This fourth house is suffering mixed indications of prosperity and annihilation. It has rasi aspects from 2 benefics, manifesting support from both Mercury and Jupiter and its houselord is adult. However, the houselord is not aspecting its own house, is asleep and the house is receiving rasi aspect from 5 malefics. These indications point to difficulties with success in the fourth house.
4.1 Person’s Life Experience
The karakas of the 4th house appear important in Meghan’s life. Her mother was her only family member at her Royal Wedding. She has spoken about happiness and inner contentment and “said it is essential for her to "thrive" and "feel happy", warning that simply enduring … is “not the point of life”.” (Furness 2019) She has been a strong advocate for access to education (Wikipedia 2020, "The Duchess's patronage ... reflects her earlier interests in ... access to education ..."). Meghan has had homes in different countries and as a child split her home between living with her father during the week and her mother on the weekends.
4.2 Sign
The fourth house of this chart is taking place in Libra. Libra is an active, air sign. It is rajasic, has 2 feet and is of medium build. It is a kama sign and is of the vata dosha. It is represented by a man in a market place weighing goods and money on a scale.
The setting of Libra could account for some of the movement in the ‘home’ area of Meghan’s life. Libra is an active, cardinal sign that will initiate things. It is also rajasic which encourages movement. As do its qualities of being vata dosha and of a kama nature following its desires.
Meghan has said about her life and home that “It's all about balance, and I have so much happiness in my career and am fortunate to travel the world and see so many amazing things – it will also be nice to be anchored to something grounded and in the same place.” (Falcone 2018)
This quote highlights Libra’s role as the field in which Meghan strives for happiness because it refers directly to balance which is a key quality of the sign.
4.3 Planet
Venus is the ruler of the fourth house. Venus is gentle, female, wet and rajasic planet. It has both water and air elements, making it of kapha and vata constitutions. It is a karaka for desire, diplomacy and good taste. Its role is to guide a person to higher fulfilment.
Venus is debilitated in this chart. It is also debilitated in the D2 and D10 charts suggesting that decisions around wealth, responsibilities, career and status might be impaired due to tamasic (Virgo) distractions (rajas, Mercury) that might keep the person from realising that they are not even connected to their higher fulfilment.
Venus has sufficient Shad bala to be effective and is suffering very little damage from the Sun (just 4.8 points of starvation) and is being delighted by Mercury to 100% of its capacity creating lots of opportunities and connections.
4.4 Planets in the Fourth House
There are three planets within just over 2 degrees in this fourth house.
4.4.1 Moon
The Moon is the ascendant lord in this chart and a detailed description of its state and qualities is in this previous blog post (section 1.3).
There is a natural connection between the Moon and the fourth house as they are both concerned with emotions and are both karakas for the mother.
4.4.2 Saturn
Saturn is the 7th and 8th house lord exalted in this 4th house. Its presence in the 4th house automatically starves the Moon (ascendant lord) and Jupiter (6th and 9th lord) to more than their individual shad bala scores. The impact on the Moon is discussed in Section 1.3. Saturn’s impact on Jupiter can be to cause tragedies that take all of the person’s hope (Jupiter) to endure. It is difficult to know the tragedies experienced in the 4th house as it is in some ways the most hidden house in the chart (being the “bottom of the sky” or Imum Coeli of the birth chart). However, perhaps this combination speaks to the bond she has with her husband Prince Harry. Jupiter is a karaka for husband and he certainly endured a sudden and profound tragedy (Saturn 8th lord) that challenged all his hope under the gaze of the masses (the Moon).
Exalted Saturn is, however, bringing to this chart an ability to endure and defeat one’s enemies (Jupiter, 6th lord) in the area of happiness and inner contentment. This adds a great strength to this person’s chart.
4.4.3 Jupiter
Jupiter is the final planet in the 4th House. Like the Moon, it shares a natural connection with the 4th House as it is exalted in the 4th sign and shares 4th House karakas like contentment and education.
In contrast, Jupiter is not at its happiest in Libra because Jupiter can’t help but support Venus in satisfying desires in the material world. This can leave Jupiter constantly engaged in external satisfaction and unable to connect to the meaning or contentment of the inner world. This would most likely be seen in Jupiter fulfilling material desires in the pursuit of happiness (4th House) or in the pursuit of ambitions (11th House) (both ruled by Venus in this chart).
4.5 Bhava Yogas
4.5.1 Ascendant Yogas
Venus forms a natural yoga of the 4th and 11th Houses for a Cancer ascendant. This echoes the themes touched on in Section 4.4.3 above. The joining to happiness and ambition can make Venus an insatiable presence. It links property with gains and the fact that this yoga is taking place in a rajasic sign, ruled by a rajasic planet, whose ascendant totem is a crab with a movable home could explain the multitude of homes Meghan has had in the short time since her marriage (N.B. during Jupiter dasa – committed to fulfilling the material desires of Venus). (Petit 2020, "They Moved Around the World")
4.5.2 4th in the 3rd
The 4th lord in the 3rd house links happiness with self-effort. This echoes the themes already present in the chart about being self-motivated. It also resonates with the presence of Saturn in this house. This combination could make a person strive too hard to be happy. It can make a person move homes often due to the distracting nature of the 3rd House. This yoga also recognises that Venus is actually in the 12th position from Libra meaning that person may be separated from their mother or waste money on real estate. Meghan has lived separately from her mother since her school years and was criticised for the amount spent renovating her home, Frogmore Cottage. (Mackelden 2020, "Frogmore Cottage ... costly endeavor for Meghan ...")
