Meghan - 1st House
Here’s the first installment of “The Meghan Project”. It’s about 1 100 words long, and really should be around 800! so please let me know what you think is most interesting … (Don’t forget to use the glossary if there are terms that are unfamiliar).
1 First House
The first house represents a person’s life path, body, personality and sense of self-esteem. As an indicator for the body, it can also shed light on their general health and vitality. The first house in this chart has a prosperity xx score of 2 and an annihilation xx score of 6.
1.1 Person’s Life Experience
Meghan is an activist, actor and humanitarian (Shepherd and Blair 2017). She comes from a diverse ethnic heritage and engages people with her unique blend of compassion and confidence. She is independent and determines her own destiny. Her body is both feminine and athletic. She is energetic and proactive. She has been an United Nations ambassador and campaigned for female equality.
1.2 Sign
The first house of this chart is taking place in the sign of Cancer. Cancer is an active water sign. It is a sattvic and moksha sign. It is represented by a crab standing in the water, symbolising the ability to navigate emotions. Crabs have a safe home away from the water that allows them to live in an aquatic world while staying on their feet. Cancer’s sattvic and moksha indicators account for Meghan’s involvement in humanitarian causes.
1.3 Planet
The first house is ruled by the Moon. The Moon is a gentle v, adaptable, feminine, wet xviii, watery planet with a vata constitution. The Moon represents the mind, the emotions and the masses.
In this chart, the Moon is in friend xix dignity. Of the 16 divisional charts, there is only one instance of the moon being anything less than friend dignity. This shows how consistently the Moon is performing well in this person’s chart. In Shad bala, all strengths are over 50% except Drik Bala which is at minus 1. This could indicate some obstacles in Moon related areas like life path, home, happiness and family (see Section 4 - yet to be publishes!). Or a receptivity to perceive obstacles in these areas.
The Moon is also being starved xvi by Saturn to more than its own total Shad bala score. When Saturn starves the Moon the person’s emotional needs can be neglected by abuse and it puts significant pressure on the person to prove their worth. It can make the person hard and driven and compromise the Moon’s natural ability to be receptive and adaptable. With the placement of the Moon as ruler of the 1st House in the 4th House, this pressure to be great would be in the area of life path, happiness and home.
One of the criticisms that appeared in the press was that Meghan was difficult for aides to work with because she got up at 5 a.m. and started sending them copious amounts of text messages. (Lakritz 2019). She perhaps was not able to adapt to the expectation that she be less desperate to prove her worth and be receptive to the support she was receiving from the institution at the pace of an institution.
However, it must be noted that Saturn is exalted xix in this chart and for this reason may be applying exactly the right amount of pressure to produce the greatness that is potential in this person’s lifetime.
The Moon is also being delighted xvi by Jupiter, Mercury and the Sun to a total of more than Saturn’s starvation. Jupiter, the largest contributor, helps the Moon’s personal needs be meaningful and have purpose, connecting them with the goodness in others and in life.
An example of this mix of Saturn starvation and friends’ delight for the Moon can be seen in a clip from the ITV documentary “Harry and Meghan: An African Journey”, (ITV News 2019). Here we see the emotion of the Moon, the fragility created by pressure from Saturn, the impossibility of those needs being met and the difficulty in adapting to a new home and new life path. We also see in the response from the public that the Moon’s vulnerability is inspiring (the Sun) for other mothers, engenders support from her friends (Mercury) (Saad 2019) and connects her meaningfully with others (Jupiter) through a trending hashtag #weloveyoumeghan (Alhumiri 2019)
1.4 Planets in the First House
1.4.1 Mars
Mars is located in the first house. It is cruel, fiery, masculine and of the Warrior caste. It is a karaka for strength, courage, energy and logic. Echoing the theme of Saturn starving the ruler of the first house, Mars is bringing fire and determination to an otherwise watery and adaptable sign. Mars is debilitated xix in Cancer because it can be overprotective and prevent those whom it is looking after from growing strong. By inadvertently seeing others as victims, it weakens them. Mars also has a high negative yoga score xxvii and at the same time is the strongest in Shad bala in this chart. This shows what a potentially tricky planet this is to work with in the chart. Mars is idealistic and as already noted in Section 1.1, Meghan is a warrior for causes like feminism and was a United Nations ambassador for political participation and leadership. Mars’s Sthana bala is 235%, meaning her Martian qualities are easily perceived by others because they are so actively put to use. Having a malefic v on the ascendant can make people uncomfortable and could explain why the press can turn from being supportive to being hostile. It is also interesting to note that Meghan was born by caesarean section (Svar 2020) and the planet Mars represents knives and surgery.
1.5 Bhava Yogas
1.5.1 Ascendant Yoga
For a Cancer ascendant, the Moon forms a natural raja yoga xxii as the ruler of both an angular and trinal house. The moon and Cancer share indicators such as water, emotions, sensitivity, adaptability and motherhood. The archetype of the crab allows this ascendant to become protective if hurt as it is protecting a deep well of emotions. This was demonstrated in the photo opportunity after the birth of her son. When Meghan first presented her son to the media it was notable that she used her arms and hands, not to hold her baby, but to guide and reassure both her husband her son. She was demonstrating the body language of protecting her family rather than being protected by her husband as might be expected when presenting a two-day old baby (The Sun Newspaper 2019).
1.5.2 1st in the 4th
The ruler of the first house located in the fourth house links the person’s life path with their mother, emotional contentment, education and home. Meghan’s mother was the only member of her family to attend her Royal Wedding which communicated to the world that her mother was important in her life. Meghan is also well known as an advocate for girls’ education (Dupre 2019). Meghan has lived in many locations since joining the royal family in 2018 including Nottingham Cottage, Frogmore Cottage, Toronto and Los Angeles (Petit 2020, section: "They Moved Around the World"). Moving homes is perhaps indicated by the following placements; the Moon being a changeable and fast-moving planet, Cancer (1st House) and Libra (4th House) being cardinal signs and Mars, the initiator, being on the ascendant. The mixture of the feminine, receptive Moon sign housing a masculine, active planet also explains many of the blended characteristics found in the description of Meghan in Section 1.1.
