The eleventh house represents gains, older siblings, large organisations, aspirations and is a house that improves as a person ages.  The 11th house in this chart has 3 indicators for prosperity and 3 for annihilation.

11.1        Person’s Life Experience

Prince Harry has one older sibling.  He has worked with large organisations such as the royal family, governments and the military all his life.  He has struggled to follow his aspirations because of his obligations to the royal family.

11.2        Sign

Scorpio is a fixed, feminine, water sign whose symbol is a scorpion in a hole.  It is associated with deep and hidden emotions because of its link with dark places like tunnels and caves.

Harry’s role as the ‘spare’ heir makes sense, externally.  But for the person living that life, their own aspirations and desires are, by definition, surplus to requirement.  It is hard to reconcile the needs of your older brother (11th house) with your desires that might be quite different.  The feminine qualities of this sign showcase how Harry turned his stress inwards and retreated his aspirations into Scorpio’s inner dark caves and tunnels.

11.3        Planet

Mars is an indicator for brothers, taking action and is cruel, fiery and masculine.

In this chart, Mars is the weakest planet in Shad bala allowing Mercury’s planetary aspect of 39 out of 60 points to be quite devastating.  It equates to Mercury, the 9th lord of tradition, taking 327.4 points away from Mars’s 346 points.  Harry surrendered his aspirations (11th house, Mars) so as to fulfil his obligations to his role (9th house of tradition and culture, Mercury).

Mars’s energy is turned inwards as frustration when its natural state of action is thwarted by Mercury’s starvation.  This gives confluence to the Scorpio indicators outlined above in section 11.2.  Harry’s comments about the therapeutic effects of boxing describe Mars’s starvation well (see previous Harry Blog post - section 4.3).

11.4        Planets in the house

There are two planets in the 11th house, Saturn and Ketu.

11.4.1        Saturn

Saturn is the ascendant lord of this chart.  It represents hard work, lack and adversity.  It is a separative planet and the house in which it is posited is often one where the person will have to renounce fulfilment.  Harry’s chart sets up either renouncing his older sibling or his aspirations.

Saturn is also being starved by the Moon and by Mars.  When the Moon starves Saturn it encourages the ego to identify with its suffering, making the person morose and depressed.  And Mars starvation of Saturn gives the person an enormous internal pressure to correct their flaws.  This is mostly counterproductive because it fills the person’s awareness with their inadequacies which makes them even more ineffective.

11.4.2        Ketu

Ketu is also a separative influence.  Its role is to deny fulfilment in the house in which it is posited in, there by encouraging exploration of Rahu’s house.

Ketu’s placement in this chart confirms the likelihood of not finding fulfilment in the 11th house.

As well as being separative, Ketu and Saturn also share indicators such as discipline, narrow perspective and restriction.  They both hyper-focus on what might go wrong.  This echoes Mercury’s starvation of Mars (the 11th lord) by encouraging overthinking.

Combining the indicators from Mars, Mercury, Saturn and Ketu, it is easy to see why Harry has struggled to fulfil his aspirations.

Ketu in the 11th house separates a person from feeling comfortable in large organisations, the person can feel like an outsider.  But Harry’s attempts to retreat internally and deal with the frustration of Mars are also not supported by Ketu.  Ketu in Scorpio is indicating karmic expertise in relying on inner security.  In this lifetime, Ketu will make inner security unsustainable and force the person to confront their fears of being independent and needing external support.

11.5        Bhava Yogas

11.5.1        Ascendant Yogas

Mars links inner happiness with recognition for Capricorn ascendants.  This yoga is particularly hard for Harry as it is easy for the world to compare him to his brother (11th house) who is fulfilling his clear birth role while Harry is being a ‘spare’.  It adds confluence to the strain between happiness and the older sibling (see section11.2), tempting Harry to think, that either he can be happy or he can be dutiful to his older sibling and role, but not both.

11.5.2        11th in the 12th

Having the 11th lord in the 12th house links personal dreams and older siblings with the house of loss.  It can make it hard to fit into large groups.  The person spends too much time in fantasy and is not able to manifest their ambitions in actuality.

This can be seen in Harry’s life.  He has had to let go of either his aspirations or his older sibling.  Their relationship is currently strained  -  “when (Harry) announced (he) was leaving the royal family …, William … felt that his brother was abandoning his sense of duty and birthright.  William was so upset with Harry … he refused to meet his brother” (Nicoll 2020).

This yoga can also give a person an interest in other cultures and indicate that their gains may come from involvement with distant lands.  Harry has travelled extensively and has begun creating his own financial gains in a foreign country.  He has also shown an ability to understand other cultures by founding his first charity, during his gap year, in Lesotho, Africa and most recently, encouraging people to examine their unconscious racial bias (BBC 2020).
