In this first house, I’m going to talk about Jupiter and Saturn and their influence on a person’s experience of suffering and hardship. Are you a Capricorn Ascendant? Can you relate to some of Prince Harry’s experience? Or do you have Jupiter in Capricorn? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below … (P.S. Don’t forget that you can check any terms that are unfamiliar in the glossary).

1         First House

The first house represents a person’s life path, body, personality and sense of self-esteem.  As an indicator for the body, it can also shed light on their general health and vitality.  The first house in this chart has a prosperity score of 4 and an annihilation score of 6.  Given this near neutral score, the house would be expected to perform fairly in the person’s life experience.

1.1        Person’s Life Experience

The expected performance of the house is indeed reflected in this person’s life experience.  Prince Harry is a redhead of average height and build.  He has used his body as an athlete and a soldier and yet he is not ‘famous’ for his body.  Although he has been famous since birth, his personality is perhaps a little reserved and it has taken time for him to share himself with the world.  It has also taken time for him to develop his life path and, in contrast to his brother who will be king, his life path has been and remains less clearly defined.  Let’s now examine how the zodiac sign, planetary energy and ruler may be affecting this house and the person’s life experience.

1.2        Sign

The first house is taking place in Capricorn.  This is an earth sign that is tamasic and artha in nature.  Its places are described as wilderness, forests, woods and marshes.  These are places of natural resources that require effort to access and exploit.

The indicators of Capricorn contextualise Princes Harry’s challenges in finding his personal life path.  On one level, his life path was very clear at birth i.e. to be the 2nd in line to the throne if his brother was unavailable.  And this speaks to Capricorn’s rich natural resources that need to be tapped through work and effort.  At another level, his personal life path was hidden and hard to access because it was only defined by being in relation to another person’s path and obviously with everyone hoping that Prince Harry would never have to face taking on the role.  So how does one find one’s own life path when it is obscured by someone else’s role?  Here we see the second part of the description of Capricorn’s places – that is, finding one’s way through the wilderness.  Given Harry’s life path is located in the sign of Capricorn, it is not surprising that he has perhaps felt lost and that it has, and I,s taking time to become clear.

1.3        Planet

This theme is echoed by the fact that Saturn rules the first house of this chart.  Saturn is cruel, tamasic, dry and of the air and earth element.  It is a karaka for grief and misfortune, hard labour, adversity, discipline, endurance, time and for success through hard work.

Saturn creates a double indicator for Harry’s experience of feeling lost, having to work hard and things taking time to become clear, as both the sign and the planet share these qualities.

Harry is famous for a life path marked by the loss of a parent at a young age.  He was also born into the royal title of Prince which one might imagine to be a great blessing.  And yet, from what Prince Harry has shared of his own perspective, this seems to have been experienced by him as a heavy burden.  It is worth noting that Saturn as 172 points of Kala Bala.  Kala Bala indicates how strongly an experience will affect a person.  From Harry’s score we can see that Saturn related things, such as loss, grief, adversity and burdens, are going to make a strong impact on this person.  Saturn is also in ‘Yuva’ Balaadi Avastha meaning that Saturn’s karma is active in this life time.  Unfortunately, Saturn is also Sushupti (asleep).  Together this means that the karmas will be strong (from Kala Bala and Balaadi Avastha) but they will catch the Prince by surprise as he will not see them coming (Sushupti Jagraadi Avastha).  This is a fitting description of the loss of his mother that happened during summer holidays, a time of care-free relaxation.  His mother was on holiday herself, away from her high profile work which involved dangers such as clearing landmines and working with AIDS charities.  It should have been a time of safety and fun.  And instead it turned to tragedy, catching the Prince completely by surprise.

At the time of his mother’s death, transiting Saturn was in Aries which is Prince Harry’s 4th House and house of the mother.  Mars, the ruler of Aries the 4th House, was transiting Scorpio where Prince Harry has Ketu (the node that is associated with separation and loss).  Transiting Rahu was also square to Harry’s birth Mars (4th lord and an indicator for mother in this chart).  Venus (the 5th and 10th lord) was transiting Harry’s birth Venus providing energy to make this event life changing (5th house) and well known (10th house).  The death happened during Mo/Ve/Mo sub dasa and this person was both Harry’s mother (Moon) and a physically beautiful woman (Venus).  During the midnight period of the accident and trip to hospital, Harry’s 4th cusp was in Leo, his 8th house of accidents and transformation with the transiting Moon (see sub dasa).  In the transiting D30, Saturn was in Scorpio (where Ketu is in birth chart) and Rahu and Ketu were in Taurus (where Rahu is in birth chart).  Mars (4th lord) was in Leo which is Harry’s 8th house.

1.4        Planets in the First House

Let’s now examine how the qualities of planets in the house are affecting this person’s life experience.

1.4.1        Jupiter

There is one planet, Jupiter, in the 1st house of this chart.  Jupiter is gentle, expansive and optimistic.  It is moist, kaphic, sweet and has the ether and fire elements and its colour is orange.  It contrasts almost completely with the indicators outlined above for Saturn and Capricorn.  And for this reason, Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn.

Jupiter is a karaka for grace and its debilitation here in the first house of the chart indicates that even though grace was granted by being born a prince, it was felt as a burden.

Jupiter in this chart has zero points of Ayana Bala (conflict resolution approach).  When Jupiter has strong Ayana Bala it is able to see the big picture and understand why conflict is worth experiencing.  Here, the position of Jupiter indicates that Harry will have very little capacity to see the purpose of adversity and will instead feel overwhelmingly depressed and demotivated in the face of difficult conflicts.  This explains Harry’s depression in relation to his mother’s passing.  At a time of such shock (as described by Saturn’s Kala Bala above), Jupiter was not able to provide Harry with the big picture that would give the experience meaning.  Instead he “blamed the media for Princess Diana’s death” (Tinubu 2020) and “the prince acknowledged that he … completely blocked his emotions for years, an ostrich policy that resulted in severe psychological effects” (Rodriguez 2017).

The ‘ostrich policy’ is a fitting description of Jupiter debilitated in Capricorn.  Jupiter naturally looks up and is optimistic.  But in Capricorn, it is constrained by Saturn’s downward gaze, burying Jupiter in Capricorn’s tamasic and earthy heaviness.

On a lighter note, Jupiter’s presence in the first house has contributed its orange colour to Harry’s hair colour.

1.5        Bhava Yogas

1.5.1        Ascendant Yoga

Saturn rules both the 1st and 2nd houses for this chart.  This links a person’s life path with responsibility and makes them hard working.  As a member of the British Royal Family, Harry was born into a life where he had no choice but to be involved in service and duty.  When first given a choice about his life path, he chose to follow a career in the military which is an area of work that requires responsibility and hard work.

1.5.2        1st in the 11th

Saturn is located in the 11th house in this chart.  This placement links the person’s life with their dreams, ambitions and with influential people.  In Harry’s life, we can see that he has had access to influential people since birth.  His ability to achieve his own ambitions has been challenging because, on one hand, he is a Prince and has wealth and privilege, but on the other hand, his own ambition must be sacrificed for the sake of the institution of the Royal Family.  This is typical of the work of a malefic planet in a chart: it makes the person work hard for success.
